Depo-Provera Birth Control Lawsuit

Use of Depo-Provera, an injectable form of birth control manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., has been linked to a five-fold increase in the development of brain tumors called “Meningiomas”. These tumors can grow and impact brain function, causing symptoms like seizures, vision problems, and cognitive impairment. Meningioma tumors are treated with surgical removal and may additionally require radiation and chemotherapy.

Despite being aware of the increased risk of developing Meningioma tumors, Pfizer hasn’t updated the Depo-Provera warning label to inform patients.

What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992 as a hormonal birth control method administered through an injection every three months. It contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. By preventing ovulation and altering the uterine lining, Depo-Provera effectively reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. Over 74 million women globally rely on this medication to prevent pregnancy.

What’s the Problem with Depo-Provera?

Recent findings have indicated a link between Depo-Provera and meningioma brain tumors. Specifically, a French study from 2024 published in the British Medical Journal found that women who used Depo-Provera as a birth control method for more than a year were found to be at least five times more likely to develop these tumors. These researchers looked at data on 108,336 women, including 18,061 who developed meningioma brain tumors and had surgery.

The risk was notably higher in women who had used Depo-Provera for extended periods. The same study did not show an increased risk of meningiomas in women using oral contraceptives. These Meningioma tumors can grow and exert pressure on the brain, often necessitating invasive surgery with serious health risks and potential complications.

Common symptoms of Meningioma development include headaches, seizures, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, blurry vision or double-vision, hearing loss, loss of smell, pituitary gland dysfunction and memory loss. A Meningioma brain tumor may not display any symptoms for years, until they get big enough to push on the brain, nerves, or blood vessels. Meningioma treatment involves surgery to remove the brain tumor and radiation therapy to prevent it from coming back.

If you developed a meningioma after using Depo-Provera, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. Statutes of limitations apply which may limit the time in which a case can be brought so acting promptly is crucial to preserve your legal rights.

If you or a loved one used the injectable birth control Depo-Provera for more than one year and were diagnosed with a Meningioma brain or spine tumor, please complete the short intake on this page and a legal professional will contact you shortly. You pay nothing unless your lawsuit is successful and you receive compensation.
